Basic Hummus Ingredients
Traditionally, hummus is known as a Mediterranean dip or spread, made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. Often, some kind of liquid element is also helpful to aid in the blending process and adjust the texture. You can use regular water for this, or I like to add extra flavor by reserving some of the chickpea water from my canned chickpeas before draining them!
Now, there are many variations out there on this classic base recipe, and you will find some entirely unique hummus flavors throughout this post. So, here’s my full disclosure: some of these recipes would be considered “bean dips” rather than a true, traditional hummus.
Some recipes use chickpeas and other beans, in some recipes you can omit the chickpeas altogether, other recipes leave out the tahini. This flexibility is what gives us a variety of hummus flavors to enjoy! Just keep in mind, I’m using the term “hummus” more broadly.
Tips for Different Flavors of Hummus
Understanding the basics of a homemade hummus recipe, it’s simple to create different flavors of hummus and switch things up from time to time! The adjustments can be big or small—from changing the type of bean you use as a base, to just a simple swap of seasoning. Here are some basic tips to explore:
Switch up the beans.
Chickpeas are the classic hummus base ingredient, but you make other “bean dips,” too! Try using chickpeas and another type of bean together, or ditch the chickpeas altogether and try something new entirely. Black beans, white beans, edamame hummus—there are tons of options that can add fresh flavors and new nutrients into your dips.
In terms of preparing your beans, go with whatever you prefer. If you’re into cooking dry beans at home, in your slow cooker, or in your pressure cooker, go for it! Personally, I keep things simple with canned beans for convenience, and my homemade hummus always turns out delicious. You do you!
Blend in a new veggie.
As you’ll see in my hummus flavors below, several recipes include cooked veggies like roasted cauliflower, beets, or sweet potato. These may seem like unexpected additions, but they blend up easily once cooked, they can add nice flavor and/or color to the dip, and they load in some sneaky nutrients!
Explore whatever sorts of veggies that you like. Butternut squash, caramelized onions, roasted carrots—get creative with the flavors YOU enjoy! Think about how it tastes, how it might need to be cooked, and what can soften up enough to blend into a dip.
Think sweet and spicy.
If you’re an outside-the-box kind of eater, don’t limit yourself to the savory hummus flavor profile! You can take your hummus on the spicy route, on the sweet route, or anywhere in between
For the spicy lovers, incorporate the zesty flavorings you enjoy like jalapeno, red pepper, or even habanero peppers. For the sweet tooths, try additions like cocoa powder, maple syrup, fruit jam or dried fruit. Or, get weirder in the middle ground with additions like nut butter, soy sauce—anything that sounds tasty to you!
Add simple flavorings & seasonings.
For those who prefer a classic hummus in all of its glory, you can still preserve the flavor you love while adding a bit of variety from time to time. Go heavier on the garlic or try roasted garlic, add in a bit of a mustard you like, toss in some fresh herbs—you can keep it savory and give it a bit of a twist!
Don’t like it? Omit or replace it!
This is essential to keep in mind as you explore the different flavors of hummus I’ve shared below! With any of my recipes, if there’s a particular ingredient or seasoning that you don’t like, feel free to omit it from the recipe or replace it with something else. Not a fan of tahini? Nix it. Don’t like cashew butter? Use any nut or seed butter you enjoy.
The beauty of these hummus flavors and hummus in general is that there’s no ‘wrong’ way to do it! Just think about flavors that you enjoy, and then blend them all up into your ultimate dip.

How to Make Hummus Flavors
Below, you’ll find 8 unique hummus flavors that you can try, and feel free to customize them however you like! Switch up the beans, adjust some of the flavorings and seasonings—whatever suits you. The beauty of all of these different hummus flavors is that they’re all equally easy to make! For a few recipes, you may need to prep or cook a specific ingredient first so it’s in a blend-able state. But for the most part, it’s as simple as toss everything in the food processor (or high-powered blender) and let it rip!
Also, keep in mind that some recipes have mix-ins that are best added after blending, so they retain their texture. If you’re swirling in some yogurt, or stirring in something like dried fruit or nuts, wait to add until you’ve got the base of your homemade hummus blended. And of course, add any toppings at the end, too. Once it’s ready, serve with your favorite dippers and enjoy!

All of the deliciousness of wing night—in a vegan cauliflower hummus recipe!? Roast cauliflower in buffalo sauce and it takes on all of the spicy flavor you love. Then blend it up with a simple hummus base, and you’ve got a dip that’s finger-lickin’ good!

It’s the latest trend, and it’s super easy to make at home. Instead of savory spreads and seasonings, this chocolaty dip pairs chickpeas with creamy nut butter, some maple syrup, and of course cocoa powder. Serve with pretzels, strawberries, and apple slices for sweet dippers!
PB&J Hummus Recipe

Now you can turn the classic PB&J sandwich into an irresistibly rich, creamy dip! It’s just as easy as making homemade peanut butter, but with some chickpeas thrown into the mix. Serve it with a swirl of your favorite jam for a salty-sweet treat that everyone will want to eat!
